Experience Grimm Brothers, Bavarian Beer, Mead and Medieval Knights in Kaltenberger, Bavaria.
There are two events worth checking out if you want to experience some German history. While more well known by local Bavarians there is a festival held every July and a Christmas Market at the Kaltenberger castle outside of Munich that is worth checking out.
The first is the ‘Kaltenberg Knights Tournament’
An annual knights tournament and medieval festival are held in July at the Kaltenberg castle. Kaltenberg Castle is about 40 km west of Munich. If you are in the area in July you should Experience the small medieval town and immerse yourself in the crafts, history, food, music and special shows throughout the day.
There are several stands around the grounds from which you can purchase handcrafted games, jewellery, sweets, clothing and much more. Relax with some live action roleplay as actors interact with visitors or take a trip to the band stage and dance along with great modern medieval bands such as Corvus Corax.
Don’t forget to hydrate your body in the summer heat! The castle brews it’s own beer, lucky for you! Enjoy a few ‘König Ludwig’ (King Ludwig) beers inside the castle grounds or at one of the old bars around town. Enjoy some ‘König Ludwig’ beer in the castle grounds or at one of the smaller bars around town.
The day culminates with the knights’ tournament show and a parade. 3/4. Experience the fights for the throne, the jousting, and lots of acting and fighting. There are heroes on horseback, black knights and damsels in distress. Also, you can get some Honig Wein, aka Mead. Another favorite beverage of mine.
This has to be one of my most favorite day trips from Munich! It is extremely easy to get there; just take a DB train from Munich Hauptbahnhof to Geltendorf, and then take a bus provided by the festival site. Travel time is approximately 50 minutes.

Kaltenberger Christmas Market
If you visit Munich in December, the town and castle will be transformed into a beautiful medieval Christmas market inspired by the works of the Grimm brothers. This market has everything you’d expect of a classic German spread: the glühwein, the crafts, the twinkling lights. One thing that stands out, though, is its the Grimm Brothers tie-in.
The castle was initially built in 1292, but was destroyed and reconstructed twice over history. It is still owned by Prince Luitpold of Bavaria, a member of the former Wittlesbacher Monarchy that reigned until 1918. He is the Chief Executive Officer of the König Ludwig Brewery. I found the following picture online. My fellow Papago Brewing Monks Club members will appreciate it…and I now know what I will be purchasing on my next trip there,,,,Monks Club Mugs!!!!
